Decker Mountain
July 15th 2025
13.8 km (8.6 miles) and 1,118 metres (3,671 feet) of elevation gain round trip.

If you can't tell, i'm a bit obsessed with glaciers. A couple weeks ago Lila and I hiked the Overlord trail to the end of the trail where a tarn sits at the base of Decker Mountain. Looking up at Decker mountain I knew I wanted to come back and summit the mountain. I really wanted to look down from the top and see the Decker Glacier.
We hopped on the Blackcomb Gondola and started hiking the Overlord trail at 11am. We reached the tarn by 12pm and started our ascent. The route looked very straightforward from the base. Once on the mountain the talus and boulder field proved to be more challenging to move through than I had anticipated. Looking up at the mountain from the base I thought it would only take 30 minutes to the summit, but it took an hour and 45 minutes. Coming down we found a slightly better route, but we still were careful not to knock down any loose boulders so it took an hour and a half.

We only saw two other people after leaving the trail and I’m not sure if the other group reached the summit as there were no footprints in the short snow crossing at the top.
Incredible 360 views from the summit. I especially loved looking at the Overlord Glacier and the aesthetic Fissile peak. We could even see Russett Lake which I am hoping to camp at soon and climb Overlord Mountain.

Decker Glacier looked to be a smaller glacier. And Decker Lake was large, and stunningly blue. You cannot see the lake until you peer over the edge from the summit. Wow.

We saw one marmot on the trail and one bear from the gondola.
First summit of the season!
This was also the first hike I went on since buying a fancy new camera, the Sony a7rv.
